Hiking holidays on the Alpe di Siusi – Autumn impressions
In the fall, passionate hikers can spend a dream vacation. The weather is very consistent and the mountain peaks reward you with breathtaking views that usually are visible only after a cleansing thunderstorm. Even the alpine shelters in higher regions are usually still open until early October and will pamper you with popular South Tyrolean specialities.
Sometimes winter may send its first signs and the mountain tops of the Dolomites wear a white cap. The crystal clear sky with the snow-capped mountains and the colourful foliage of trees and shrubs creates a wonderful play of colours. This lasts only a few hours, as the sun is still quite strong and the snow melts away almost immediately.
The autumn on the Alpe di Siusi is ushered with the “Almmarkt” (Alpine Market) and in early October the traditional cattle drive with ornate cows takes place. The cattle are leaving the Alpe di Siusi and are driven to the pastures in the valley.
South Tyrolean delicacies during your hiking holiday on the Alpe di Siusi
Autumn in South Tyrol also means culinary pleasures – in addition to the traditional culinary event “Voelser Kuchlkastl” and the “Strudel Weeks”, in the taverns the ancient tradition of Toerggelen is celebrated. Hearty South Tyrolean dishes are served, often accompanied by music, and the new wine is tasted.
Roasted chestnuts complete the meal. On our sustainably managed farm in autumn the vegetable and potato harvest is in full swing and the cows enjoy the last warm days on the pastures. Every year in early October in Castelrotto, home of the famous music band “Kastelruther Spatzen”, the big “Kastelruther Spatzen Festival” takes place and draws thousands of fans. It is an event that must be experienced at least once!
